A Sleepy Sun
A Sleepy Sun peers through wispy clouds behind the silhouette of
Stearns Wharf at dawn. Santa Barbara's romantic pier is hte legacy of one-legged lumberman John
Peck Stearns, who constructed it in 1871 for the price of $40,000. Although the Wharf was
built so that freighters could unload logs on a dock rather than trust them to the whims of the tide,
it served the same function for visitors arriving by boat who no longer had to wade or row
ashore! Closed and transfigured many times by fires, storms, misfortune, and even war, the
wharf you see above is owned by the City of Santa Barbara, and its classic structures date
from 1981.
